APM Terminals Valencia in Spain has introduced new Virtual Private LTE provided Telefonica Spain.

A standards-based network that uses radio equipment to service the terminals applications and services, LTE network can be customised for more optimised performance such as low latency.

Industrial wireless connectivity has helped enable the global initiatives of APM Terminals which include Terminal Operating Systems standardisation, reporting and support; Asset Digitalization; and GPS based Position Detection Systems.

The current WiFi network at APM Terminals Valencia was not able to reliably handle higher data volumes required for the digital transformation, which led to the need for re-design.

APM Terminals Global Technical head Jack Michael Craig said: “Stable and reliable industrial wireless infrastructure is critical for all automation and digitization efforts.

“The foreseeable trend is that the number of applications and use cases requiring wireless capabilities will increase at terminals,”

The installed 4G Radio Access Network (RAN) at the terminal yard was integrated with the current Core (EPC) part of the telecom infrastructure.

The terminal used an end-to-end IPSec Tunnel as an encryption mechanism to separate the data of APM Terminals from general carrier data, which would ensure that the network adheres to the global security requirements of the company.

The new 4G LTE connectivity solution was well-matched for the terminal as it could meet the requirements for coverage and performance with larger cell size and reduced infrastructure deployment.

The solution is said to be ‘an optimised, standardised, cost effective, and security compliant Industrial Wireless connectivity solution’ that will aid the global transformation with an option to scale up with the growth of the terminal.
