The Bio-LNG was sourced through virtual liquefaction at the Enagás Regasification Plant in Cartagena, a facility certified by the European Union’s International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) since July.

This certification ensures the plant adheres to the stringent environmental, social, and traceability criteria set by the European Commission.

Axpo small-scale LNG head Daniele Corti said: “This operation demonstrates Axpo’s commitment to pioneering sustainable LNG solutions in the Iberian market and actively supporting the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.”

“We are dedicated to expanding our Bio-LNG portfolio to meet the increasing demand for cleaner marine fuels and help our customers achieve their ambitious emissions targets.”

Cartagena’s strategic importance as a Mediterranean LNG infrastructure hub is underscored by its role in supplying next-generation marine fuels and aiding Europe’s broader decarbonisation efforts.

The sourcing strategy highlights the increasing adaptability of LNG infrastructure to integrate sustainable fuel alternatives.

This landmark bunkering operation builds on Axpo’s previous LNG bunkering achievements in other key ports, including Málaga, Algeciras, and Sines.

The standard proof of sustainability certificate for the Bio-LNG delivery was issued at the beginning of August by Enagás, further authenticating the environmental credentials of the operation.
