Japanese officials have reported 57 additional cases of Covid-19 on the Costa Atlantica cruise ship.

This brings the total number of cases on the ship to 148. Officials have completed the testing of all 623 crew members on board.

On 23 April, officials reported that the total number of cases on the ship increased to 91.

The ship only carries crew and there are no passengers on board.

The ship is docked in a shipyard in Nagasaki and is undergoing repairs. It was transported by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding in February when the repairs could not be carried out in China due to the outbreak.

Only one crew member was transported to the hospital for treatment and the remaining crew are on board and are being monitored.

The crew on the ship was not allowed to leave the wharf after the ship arrived in Japan. However, it was reported that some of the crew had gone outside the restricted area.

The ship operator is planning to repatriate the crew members who tested negative to their home countries.

Japan has so far reported more than 13,000 cases with approximately 370 deaths.

The infections on the Costa Atlantica cruise ship follow the outbreak on Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess cruise ship, which was one of the major clusters of the coronavirus.

It was reported that approximately 700 confirmed cases and ten deaths were linked to Diamond Princess.
