Germany’s DB Schenker has entered a purchase contract with French container shipping company CMA CGM for more than 2,500t of biofuel.

With this deal, DB Schenker is said to become the first logistics firm to switch its entire less-than container load (LCL) volumes to regular carbon-free production.

The acquisition will enable the company to attain net-zero carbon emissions on a well-to-wake basis in the LCL sector.

DB Schenker clients can now select the zero-carbon LCL option and obtain a certificate of emission reduction for their climate balance sheet.

This partnership is expected to lower greenhouse gas emissions by more than 7,000t CO₂ equivalent well-to-wake.

DB Schenker air and ocean freight global board member Thorsten Meincke said: “We are excited to make a significant investment in reducing the CO₂ footprint in container sea freight.

“Running on biofuel marks another important step towards greener supply chains and pays into our overall sustainability agenda in ocean freight. Our goal is to become a sustainability leader of the logistics industry and net carbon-zero by 2040, and we are ambitiously taking the lead here with CMA CGM.”

Over the past few years, several firms have been working on the deployment of biofuel for enabling greener operations.

Produced from waste materials, biofuel can be incorporated into regular operations without infrastructure or supply chain modifications.

Last month, TotalEnergies and CMA CGM launched the initial ship-to-containership liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation in the Port of Marseille Fos, Southern France.
