Logistics and supply chain solutions provider DP World has initiated berth expansion at the Port of Posorja in Ecuador.

With a $140m private investment by DP World, the expansion is expected to create numerous jobs, both directly and indirectly. The ground-breaking ceremony for the expansion took place on 27 January 2024.

The expansion involves the construction of an additional 232.5m of dock, extending the terminal’s berth to a total of 700m. This will allow the port to accommodate two post-Panamax vessels simultaneously at full capacity.

It also encompasses the procurement of advanced machinery, including two gantry cranes and three rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs).

This equipment is essential for handling a diverse range of goods, including fresh, frozen, manufactured, and raw material goods.

The expansion is also designed to accommodate the growing demand for transhipment cargo.

Posorja’s advantageous location on the South Pacific’s west coast, coupled with Ecuador’s free trade agreements and international treaties, offers a “competitive advantage” in both regional and international trade, stated the company.

DP World Colombia, Ecuador and Peru CEO Carlos Merino said: “This project is a tangible example of how investment in infrastructure, technology, and innovation can enhance Ecuador’s connectivity and accelerate the Port of Posorja’s positioning as a strategic shipping hub, not only for Latin America but for the world.

“We are proud to drive development in infrastructure that enhances the competitiveness of Ecuadorian products by expanding direct shipping services to global markets.”

DP World’s investment in Ecuador currently totals around $500m, including the port terminal’s construction, a 21km access road, and an exclusive maritime access channel for deep-draft vessels. Last year, the terminal handled 955,728 twenty-foot equivalent (TEUs).

This latest development follows the recently completed Bicentennial Pier Expansion Project at the Port of Callao in Peru and marks another “milestone” in DP World’s expansion across Latin America.

In October 2024, DP World expanded its container fleet with the acquisition of 47,000 TEUs, ensuring seamless access to capacity during peak demand and disruptions.
