e1 Marine, which offers methanol-to-hydrogen power systems, has joined with STAX Engineering to facilitate emissions capture and control technology for ocean-going vessels.

This collaboration seeks to accelerate the decarbonisation of the maritime industry by integrating e1 Marine’s advanced methanol-to-hydrogen power systems (M2PWR) with STAX’s emissions capture and control (C&C) technology.

e1Marine executive director David Lee said: “Partnering with STAX Engineering allows e1 Marine to showcase how our M2PWR system can provide cleaner power for barge operations while in port.

“By combining our technical expertise, we will ensure the system meets all regulatory requirements and complies with evolving emissions mandates. We hope this initiative demonstrates to the market that proven solutions are available to reduce port emissions and improve air quality in coastal communities.”

The project is funded by the South Coast AQMD and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) through California Climate Investments.

This statewide programme invests billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen the economy, and improve public health and the environment, particularly in disadvantaged communities.

The technology demonstration project is expected to deploy in early 2025.

South Coast AQMD was the grant administrator and teamed up with STAX and e1 Marine on this initiative.

As part of the project, e1 Marine will install its M2PWR system on STAX’s barges to support their onboard power requirements.

This will demonstrate that emissions capture and control technology for maritime vessels can be both safe and effective, while also promoting sustainability.

STAX already offers CARB-compliant C&C technology for certain vessel classes. Meanwhile, e1 Marine provides a practical, low- to zero-emission alternative to fossil fuels, aiding the maritime industry’s efforts toward decarbonisation.

STAX CEO Mike Walker said: “Our partnership with e1 Marine highlights our dedication to providing solutions that are both available now and immediately effective for the maritime industry. We’re committed to going beyond emissions compliance, driving the industry toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.

“We’re excited to integrate e1 Marine’s power generator running on hydrogen fuel cells into our operations, ensuring STAX operates in the most environmentally friendly way possible.”

The patented STAX C&C technology can be easily installed on auxiliary and boiler exhausts across all vessel classes without the need for modifications. It removes 99% of particulate matter and 95% of nitrogen oxides before releasing purified emissions.
