Envision Energy has announced the completion of a green marine ammonia bunkering operation, which the company claims to be the world’s first such operation.

This event, which took place at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s terminal in Dalian, China, represents the culmination of the entire value chain for green ammonia fuel, from production to operation of ammonia-powered vessels.

At the heart of this achievement is Envision’s Chifeng Green Hydrogen-Ammonia Project, a green hydrogen and ammonia production facility.

The project is powered by an independent renewable energy system consisting of wind, solar, and energy storage, and utilises proprietary technologies to dynamically couple power generation with green molecule production.

Envision Energy senior vice president Frank Yu said: “This successful bunkering demonstrates how net zero fuels can scale from renewable power generation to hard-to-abate sectors like maritime shipping – a true breakthrough for green ammonia.

“We are proud that our green ammonia powered the world’s first bunkering of its kind. It’s a testament to Envision’s ability to deliver end-to-end net zero solutions that accelerate the replacement of fossil fuels with green energy in shipping and redefine what’s possible for the broader industrial transition.”

The green ammonia fuel used in this operation received the ISCC Plus certification, making it the “first” project globally to be recognised for green ammonia with a verified greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint.

Additionally, Bureau Veritas has awarded the fuel with a renewable ammonia certification, underscoring its sustainability credentials.

China Shipping & Sinopec Suppliers conducted the inaugural bunkering of the green ammonia fuel for a 5,500HP ammonia-fuelled port tugboat.

The tugboat is fitted with an ammonia dual-fuel engine and a dedicated fuel supply system, which allows for a 91% ammonia substitution rate.

This significantly reduces the dependence on fossil fuels and cuts carbon emissions during operations.

Furthermore, the vessel has been granted the “Ammonia Fuel Tug” classification by China Classification Society.

The bunkering operation highlights Dalian Port’s capacity to offer a range of green bunkering services, including biofuel, green methanol, LNG, and now green ammonia, while also filling a crucial gap in the supply chain for green ammonia marine fuel for international trade vessels, according to Envision.
