It is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution, compared to traditional diesel-powered ships.

The project aims to showcase the commercial and environmental benefits of battery-electric propulsion in coastal freight operations.

Franzefoss Minerals logistics manager Hynne Hoem said: “At Franzefoss Minerals, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations.

“Participating in this project allows us to take a concrete step toward more sustainable freight transport and aligns with our long-term climate goals.”

GC Rieber Shipping has entered an LoI with K. Sætre & Sønner for the vessel’s operation.

The project is pivotal in gaining valuable development and operational experience with battery-electric systems, which in turn will lay the groundwork for the broader adoption of clean technologies within the company’s fleet.

GC Rieber Minerals chief commercial officer Per Gunnar Syrdalen said: “This project is a key enabler for us to deliver low-emission transport of salts and minerals. We are proud to be in the forefront of delivering sustainable solutions that our customers and partners are continuously asking.
