US-based Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has unveiled a strategic plan to double the container handling capacity of its Garden City Terminal at the Port of Savannah to ten million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) within the next decade.
The plan is also expected to allow Savannah and other GPA-operated ports to handle one million rail lifts annually, as well as more than one million auto and machinery units.

GPA aims to add 42 ship-to-shore cranes, 200 yard cranes and new rubber tyred gantry crane (RTG) lanes as part of the 2028 Plan, in addition to carrying out other intermodal expansion initiatives at the Savannah port.
Furthermore, GPA is scheduled to open its second inland terminal in Northwest Georgia and begin the construction of the Mason Mega Rail project at the Garden City Terminal.
Both the intermodal projects are set to open new markets upon completion, as well as reduce rail crossings and the amount of road freight through Savannah, Atlanta and beyond.

In addition, GPA intends to complete the ongoing outer harbour dredging project at Savannah by March, which will bring the entire Savannah Harbor Expansion Project to 50% completion.
The deepening of the site’s inner harbour is slated to be completed by late-2021, with the aim of facilitating the handling of larger Neo-Panamax vessels.
GPA is also planning to increase its vehicle handling capacity to 1.4 million units at the Port of Brunswick in Georgia, US.
