Havyard to design Fjord1’s seven battery-powered ferries

Havyard Group has secured a contract to design Fjord1’s seven battery-powered ferries, five of which will be built at the company’s own shipyard in Norway.

All the vessels will be designed to meet stringent requirements for low-energy consumption during tough weather conditions.

When completed, the ferries will be deployed by Fjord1 to serve various routes connecting Norway’s Hordaland and Møre og Romsdal. They are scheduled to be operational by January 2020.

The ferries are also set to help Fjord1 meet the Norwegian authorities’ demand for using zero-emission technology solutions to reduce emissions from ferries.

“Five of the vessels will have capacities to carry 50 cars each, while the remaining two will be able to accommodate 80 cars each.”

Havyard Group Design and Solutions head Stig Magne Espeseth said: “We have put the ferries in operation by using advanced simulation tools, this way we could optimise them to the utmost.
“Various operating profiles have been tested and reviewed, and we have achieved results that have made Fjord1 choose us as contractor for designs.”

Havyard further noted that the latest contract was secured following a competitive bid that saw the participation of various yards in Norway and abroad.

The contract has led Havyard’s total order for battery ferries at its own yard to 13. It has also enabled the company to receive orders for 12 battery ferry designs.

With the new ferries, Fjord1 seeks to play a major role in the green shift on the Norwegian fjords.
