Kalmar has entered an agreement with Noatum Container Terminal Bilbao to provide two rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs) that will be used for intermodal operation.

The two single-cantilever RMG cranes from Kalmar will each feature a rotating trolley and Bromma YSX45E spreader for single container handling with a rated load of 41t.

Kalmar will also provide its Terminal Logistics System (TLS) automation solution to enable supervised remote control as part of the arrangement.

"This order is a significant step in terms of strengthening our successful relationship with Noatum and helping them build a pathway towards more efficient terminal operation in the future."

Delivery of the new equipment is expected to take place during the first half of 2019.

Kalmar Solutions Sales and Marketing vice-president Ismo Matinlauri said: “By introducing new equipment at their terminal, Noatum Container Terminal Bilbao will have the opportunity to operate their new cranes remotely.

“This will improve the efficiency and safety of their operations and support the customer’s commitment to sustainability.

“This order is a significant step in terms of strengthening our successful relationship with Noatum and helping them build a pathway towards more efficient terminal operation in the future.”

Noatum Container Terminal Bilbao currently operates nine Kalmar RTGs, which are used to handle import and export traffic at the site.

The terminal is also using Kalmar’s Smart Rail automated gantry steering solution to improve the overall safety and performance of its RTGs.

Noatum Container Terminal Bilbao terminal manager Elvira Gallego Uribe said: “These new cranes replacing our old RMGs are significantly faster, more reliable and future proofed for efficient railyard operation, improving and increasing the security of workers involved in the operations and the containers operated on behalf of our customers.”

Noatum Container Terminal Bilbao primarily enables the transportation of containers across the Iberian Peninsula and south-west of France.
