Kongsberg Digital has secured a contract from the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) to deliver simulators for multi-vessel training scenarios.
The company will be responsible for the upgrade and extension of the K-Sim Navigation simulators based in SIDMAR, the ACP centre for simulation, research and maritime development.

The substantial upgrade will include the installation of new visual image generation and display/projection systems, as well as an array of new consoles and hardware panels at the centre’s main K-Sim Navigation simulator.
Additionally, a new floor projection system, which will replicate the port and starboard views from the bridge wings, will also be installed.
This will allow trainee officers to monitor tugs and pilot boats in demanding port and tug manoeuvring scenarios, which will have vessels in close proximity.
The delivery will also include two completely new K-Sim Navigation bridge simulators, one of which will be specially configured to duplicate a full-mission tugboat bridge and be capable of simulating various types of tug propulsion systems, such as Voith, Schottel and Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD).

By GlobalDataThe student tug masters, pilots and crew members on the main bridge will be trained using the 360° vertical displays on the new bridge simulators.
Once equipped with this new technology, the Panama City-based centre will be capable of including multiple vessels in training scenarios.
