MAN Energy Solutions has received an order for a battery-hybrid dual-fuel system from the Damen Gorinchem Holland shipyard.

Under the agreement, MAN Energy will deliver MAN 35/44DF dual-fuel engines, fuel gas-supply systems and main electric systems, including batteries.

The battery-hybrid system will be fitted in two dual-fuel / hybrid RoRo ferries being built for Canadian ferry operator Seaspan Ferries.

MAN Energy Solutions will supply the solutions in collaboration with Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA), which it has a 40% stake in.

In addition, MAN Energy Solutions’ fuel-gas specialist MAN Cryo will deliver the new fuel gas-supply system for the ferries.

In combination with a fully integrated MAN Cryo FGSS, the MAN hybrid-system solution is adjusted to the engines gas-flow requirements and provides reliable operation in gas and even with low methane numbers.

For Seaspan, it was required to avoid any diesel operation due to environmental and ecological concerns.

Operating with just one of two DF engines online at a time and at high load provides savings in terms of fuel costs, running time and spare part or maintenance costs.

Integrated by AKA, the propulsion and battery hybrid system offers sufficient propulsion power in all operational modes to help achieve improved fuel-efficiency with a minimal carbon footprint.
