Finland-based shipyard Meyer Turku has begun the construction of a new 180,000t vessel for Carnival Cruise Line.
The new XL class cruise ship will be the first vessel of its kind to operate on liquified natural gas (LNG) in North America.

The 1,130ft-long ship will feature a red, white and blue hull design developed by US-based Bluarch Architecture.
Delivery of the vessel is scheduled to take place in 2020.
Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy said: “This new ship promises to be truly special, from its groundbreaking technology and one-of-a-kind features to its distinctive livery and hull design that is both timeless and forward-thinking while paying tribute to our nearly 50-year history of making wonderful vacation memories for our guests.”
Following completion, Carnival’s new ship will comprise more than 5,200 lower berths and will form a part of the company’s ‘green cruising’ design platform.

By GlobalDataCarnival is yet to name the ship, which is set to operate from Port Canaveral, Florida, US, beginning in 2020.
The ship will be equipped with newly designed interior spaces that are being developed by Meyer Turku’s interior design team in collaboration with Carnival designers.
Meyer Turku CEO Jan Meyer said: “With the first steel cutting, our efforts in designing the hull, features and interior of the ship start to take shape.”
The company is expected to build a second XL class ship that is scheduled to be delivered in 2022.
