Swiss technology group ABB has updated its remote diagnostic service (RDS) software, which combines an on board and onshore solution to provide improved analytical and predictive capabilities associated with vessel maintenance.

The newly upgraded software will provide more power and transparency to the onshore operations of ship owners.

ABB has implemented the enhancement after an internal study concluded that users of the existing RDS and its software have been able to reduce their maintenance costs by 50%.

The upgraded version of RDS software enables shipping companies to use their own analytics or the third party analytics with better ease.

ABB has also developed its dedicated hardware for the monitoring of large and small rotating machinery of the RDS software.

"We develop all our digital solutions with the customer in mind, and we believe our new Predict service will strengthen the shore side operations of all involved."

RDS’ graphical user interface has also been improved to increase user experience and provide identical views of the detailed data both on board and on land.

ABB is helping the shipping companies to develop their land operations in line with its Integrated Operations Centres.

ABB Marine and Ports business digital services vice-president Kenneth Nakken said: “Through our Integrated Operations Solutions and Centres we aim to be connected to 3,000 vessels by 2020.

“We develop all our digital solutions with the customer in mind, and we believe our new Predict service will strengthen the shore side operations of all involved.”

ABB has also enabled the shipping companies with limited bandwidth availability or a high number of data points to customise their solution and optimise the data transfer by upgrading its RDS.
