Damen Shipyards Group has delivered the first ASD 2810 Hybrid tug, Bernardus, to Amsterdam-based Iskes Towage & Salvage, which has been designed to reduce fuel costs and emissions.

Iskes is currently operating a conventional Damen ASD Tug 2810, which it acquired in November 2011.

Iskes owner and managing director Jim Iskes said: “We already had a very good experience with our existing Damen ASD 2810, which is ideally suited to Amsterdam.”

“We are very happy with its performance and so are the crew; it was a logical move to choose Damen for the Hybrid version.”

The new Damen ASD 2810 Hybrid tug is powered by an integrated diesel-direct, diesel-electric propulsion and battery power system to achieve average fuel savings of up to 30% and emissions reductions of up to 40%.

“We are very happy with its performance and so are the crew; it was a logical move to choose Damen.”

The tug has been developed to make use of battery packs to operate under 100% electric power, even during station keeping, manoeuvring and low-speed sailing up to 5k, eliminating the need for generators.

Commenting on the use of battery power, Damen Tugs product director Coen Boudesteijn said: “This will be not only very economic but will also be so much more comfortable for the crew.”

“Harbour assisting tugs typically operate in polluted areas with high levels of particulates and nitrogen oxide, so being green is becoming a more and more important selling point.”

Damen is currently constructing four additional vessels, of which three are for the Royal Netherlands Navy in response to developments in emissions reduction and environmentally friendly shipping and one for stock.
