Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards and Dubai-based Albwardy Marine Engineering have joined forces and opened a new shipyard, Damen Shipyards Sharjah (DSS), in Sharjah, UAE.

The 284,000m² shipyard is located in the Sharjah Hamriyah free-zone and is designed to meet the highest standards of modern ship construction and repair works.

With direct and unrestricted access to the sea, the DSS will perform core activities such as Damen’s new-builds and Albwardy’s conversions, dry-dockings and repairs.

The facility is equipped with a 120m by 26.5m ship-lift with the capacity to lift 5,200t. It is also connected to eight dry-berths of 125m each.

DSS also houses a blasting and painting shed, a new-build construction hall, has room for repairs and a 1,200m quay with a water depth up to 9m.

The DSS was designed to perform repair and construction work on all types of vessels and has recently delivered tugs, workboats, support vessels, dredgers, landing craft, floating docks, barges and pontoons.
