Under a license and materials agreement with Damen, the newly ordered tugs will be built at Conrad Shipyard, Louisiana, US.

"Opening a permanent Damen presence in North America is a significant milestone for the group."

Featuring a total of 37m and a 6,000hp capacity, the first vessel of the order will be delivered in the first quarter of 2018, and the last twelve months later.

Once delivered, the tugs will provide services to Young Brothers’ fleet of new, high-capacity tugs and barges.

Damen new construction senior manager Jan van Hogerwou said: “Opening a permanent Damen presence in North America is a significant milestone for the group.

“With over 200 Damen design vessels built and delivered in the US, this has been an important market for our vessels for many years via our flexible licensing agreements, and we have enjoyed excellent cooperation with shipyards across the country.

“This latest initiative will enable us to strengthen our relationships further with both builders and operators, and serve the North American market with the innovative, cost-effective and dependable vessels that it seeks.”

With the new Houston office, Damen aims to serve the offshore oil and gas sector in North America.

The office will also support Damen’s work with shipyards and owners across the maritime sector and its own product range.

Last month, the company delivered a Damen PSV 5000 vessel to Wilson Sons Ultratug Offshore, a joint venture between Wilson Sons and Chilean maritime services provider Ultramar.
