Damen has secured a type approval from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for its InvaSave ballast water treatment system.
The external ballast water treatment unit was mainly developed for use in ports and harbours, and is capable of treating ballast water received from inbound and outbound ships in accordance with the IMO D-2 standard.

The mobile and containerised system can be operated from the dockside, or from on board a vessel travelling alongside, receiving or delivering water to a ship.
Damen has also partnered with various research institutes in the Netherlands to develop InvaSave, which produces no filter backwash and requires no holding time to achieve biological efficacy.
Land-based tests were conducted to confirm the system’s ability to treat ‘raw’ ballast water from ships without any pre-treatment or settling time in the ballast tank.

Damen note that its InvaSave system will help the marine sector comply with new regulations that are due to come into effect from 8 September, which will bar the discharging of unmanaged ballast water from ship.
