DP World is planning to spend $330m to expand the cargo throughput at its port in Djibouti.

The expansion includes construction of a quay and container handling equipment at its Doraleh container terminal (DCT), which is expected to be completed by 2014.

Upon completion, the expanded port will be able to handle three million containers a year, an increase on the current 800,000t, and one million containers by mid 2012.

Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority is also planning to launch a tender for the works in early 2012.

Djibouti serves as a port for its landlocked neighbour Ethiopia, which accounts for about 70% of traffic, according to Reuters.
