DNV GL has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Hong Kong-based China Merchants Industry Holding (CMIH) in order to advance the development of the shipbuilding industry.

The deal will mainly focus on the gas carrier, offshore and special vessel sectors and is set to help companies work together to optimise construction processes and quality control, thereby supporting the development of vessels that meet industry requirements.

It will also facilitate collaboration on classification and regulatory issues, as well as research, development and training.

DNV GL Maritime Greater China regional manager Torgeir Sterri said: “This agreement offers both our companies a great opportunity to learn from each other and work together to drive new developments in the gas carrier, offshore and special vessel segments.

DNV GL has also entered a joint development project (JDP) agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) as part of a separate development, which aims to support the development of new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier models.

The JDP will seek to develop two 30,000 LNG carrier designs, with one featuring membrane-type tanks and the other equipped with type C pressurised tanks.

Additionally, the project will involve various design review, safety analysis, market research, various structural and safety evaluation activities.

The new designs will receive an Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV GL upon completion.
