The ship classification society DNV GL is set to initiate a joint industry project (JIP) to study and understand the risks associated with an accidental liquefied natural gas (LNG) release during bunkering operations.

The JIP will be carried-out in partnership with E&P, energy companies and LNG market stakeholders to support the development of appropriate safety guidelines.

DNV GL project manager Mohammad Ahmad said that the modelling community in Europe and risk assessment experts are uncertain about the capabilities of hazard tools in predicting LNG behaviour in the event of an accidental gas release.

“This JIP will therefore contribute to the development of rigorous safety standards and guidelines for small-scale LNG bunkering and filling stations.”

“DNV GL is therefore teaming-up with industry partners to simulate several credible failure scenarios at small-scale LNG bunkering and filling stations at our Spadeadam test centre in the UK,” Ahmad said.

“This will generate valuable data to create well-verified and approved models, which accurately predict the behaviour of LNG in any type of system failure.”

“This JIP will therefore contribute to the development of rigorous safety standards and guidelines for small-scale LNG bunkering and filling stations.”

As part of the initiative, experiments will be conducted at DNV’s Spadeadam test site to study LNG behaviour in the event of a puncture / rupture of a transfer hose or the catastrophic rupture of a storage tank.

The data obtained will be used to carry-out a quantitative risk assessment.

DNV GL has already launched a recommended practice for safely and efficiently undertaking LNG bunkering operations.
