DNV GL has issued a new standard for assessing the station-keeping capability of dynamic positioning (DP) vessels, with the aim of providing a combined approach to these types of assessments.

The new DNVGL-ST-0111 standard was developed in partnership with nearly 20 industry stakeholders from Norway, the Netherlands and the UK, and is expected to ensure verifiable results and improved transparency within the market.

The standard has defined three different DP capability levels, and a further two capability levels for assessing the DP capability of vessels.

Discerning the position-keeping capability of a ship equipped with dynamic positioning technology is an important step during the planning and design phases.

This capability also offers operational decision support to ship owners, operators and other stakeholders while selecting, assessing and benchmarking vessels.

DNV GL maritime marine cybernetics advisory DP simulations principal specialist Luca Pivano said: “One of the greatest challenges in this field is to be able to compare the DP capability of different vessels.

The DNVGL-ST-0111 standard defines requirements for DP station-keeping capability assessments, in addition to calculation method documentation, and presentation and verifiability of results.

It also addresses the intact vessel condition and the worst-case single failure conditions, as well as the vessel’s dynamic positioning class notation.
