Fincantieri Marine in the US has teamed-up with naval engineering and design firm Gibbs & Cox to develop future ship and vessel concepts.
The new joint strategic research and development initiative will focus on developing new concepts that can be applied in the US and international market.
Fincantieri CEO Giuseppe Bono said: "Bringing together Fincantieri and Gibbs & Cox's complementary skills and expertise will offer innovative capabilities to the US market.
"Our aim is to develop concepts that completely fulfil the evolving needs of the customer while accounting for producibility considerations already at the design stage."
Both the firms will look for new means to develop innovative ship concepts that will be able to offer enhanced affordability and production efficiency.
The companies have also worked together with Lockheed Martin on the development of the US Navy's Freedom Class variant of the littoral combat ship.
Gibbs & Cox CEO Rick Biben said: "This initiative will benefit from a unique end-to-end vision as the naval architects of Gibbs & Cox, operating in concert with the engineers and experts of Fincantieri, will be able to develop concepts that account for the needs of programmes throughout the lifecycle of the vessels."
Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, Gibbs & Cox specialises in naval architecture, marine engineering, management support, and engineering consulting.
