Finnish cargo company Containerships has ordered two new dual-fuel engine-technology container ships, as part of the company’s efforts to be the first shortsea container operator in Europe to run ships on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Containerships CEO Kari-Pekka Laaksonen said: "Our new ships will not just meet, but exceed all environmental standards in the sulphur emission control area (SECA) where we operate.

"On top of this, with the gas mode, the engines are tier III compliant with the upcoming IMO emission regulations for SECA areas also regarding NOx."

The ships will be capable of using both use LNG and conventional marine diesel oil / heavy fuel. They will be constructed in China and are expected to be delivered in 2017.

The vessels will be able to accommodate up to 639 units of 45ft containers and 300 refrigerated containers, and will have a total capacity of 1,400 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

Containership ordered two similar vessels in May of this year, which are expected to be delivered in 2016.

As part of the €300m investment plan for both land and sea operations, Containership also plans to invest in an LNG-powered truck fleet in Finland, Russia and the UK.

"Our aim is to double both our volume and turnover within five to six years," Laaksonen added.

Hamburg’s GNS Shipping / Nordic will own and manage these ships, while Arkon will be the commercial manager and the charter broker, and Wärtsilä will deliver engines for all the ships.
