GAC EnvironHull has unveiled a new eco-friendly underwater hull cleaning solution, the HullWiper.

The compact diver-free remotely-operated vessel cleaning vehicle can clean up to 2,000m² of hull per hour without causing any damage to anti-fouling surfaces.

Performed under the GAC Group’s HSSE and compliance policies, and all local and regional environmental regulations, the hull cleaning operation can be performed alongside loading or unloading, thereby eliminating the need for off-hire time.

The cleaned hull improves the ship’s performance in terms of reduced carbon emissions and fuel consumption.

The residues captured during the cleaning process are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

HullWiper cleans around 8,000m² vertical sides of very large crude carriers (VLCC) in around seven hours, compared with 14 hours taken by conventional methods using divers.

GAC EnvironHull managing director Simon Doran said: “Clean and green is the spirit of HullWiper. In an industry that is increasingly seeking environmentally sound and risk-averse options solutions, our cleaning service ticks all the boxes.”

With the launch of HullWiper, the company has received permission from the Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency KFT to perform cleaning operations within all Norwegian ports. The UAE Environmental Department and DP World have also permitted its use in inner harbours at all quays inside the port of Jebel Ali.
