GE Energy Connections has successfully delivered the full turnkey project to VLI, which involved the engineering, supply and commissioning of the Luiz Antonio Mesquita Integrator Port Terminal (Tiplam) at the port of Santos in the Brazilian state of São Paulo.

The integrated electrical solutions that have been provided to the port are expected to fulfil all the site's electrification, power generation and control requirements.

The improvements to the port’s infrastructure are expected to provide significant economic growth to Brazil, as the country’s economy relies heavily on the export of natural resource-based products.

GE’s Power Conversion has delivered the main and a complementary substation as part of the project, as well as ten e-houses with electrical and automation systems to generate power and control to the port's Tiplam terminal.

Various pieces of equipment included to the contract were manufactured in Betim, Brazil, in order to fulfil local content requirements.

GE claimed that after the successful commissioning, the port terminal witnessed significant improvement in cargo loading and discharging efficiency, substantially reducing docking costs.

VLI terminal general manager Alessandro Gama said: “With the upgraded service drawing to conclusion, the Tiplam terminal will have an expanded capacity of 14.5 million tonnes of goods per annum.

“Working with technology partners such as GE, we are transforming the future of port transport, bringing more efficiency to our customers.”

GE also supplied customised software to optimise the management of vessel traffic under the deal.

The software provides an overview of fleet activities at the harbour and helps streamline the processes, including monitoring the time needed for loading goods and helping to eliminate queues at the terminal.
