US-based cruise company Holland America Line has started construction of its new vessel, ms Nieuw Statendam, which is scheduled for delivery in November 2018.

The beginning of the ship’s construction was marked by a steel cutting ceremony, which was held at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Palermo, Sicily, Italy.

The block of the new ship being built at Fincantieri will be moved to the Marghera shipyard, where the cruise ship will be constructed.

"While Nieuw Statendam is a sister to Koningsdam, we do have some new ideas that will be revealed in time."

Once completed, the 99,500t ms Nieuw Statendam will join its sister-ship, ms Koningsdam, which debuted in April this year.

The ms Nieuw Statendam is the second Pinnacle Class vessel for the Holland America Line, and will be able to accommodate 2,650 guests.

Holland America Line president Orlando Ashford said: “With Pinnacle Class we have been able to try new things, expand our horizons and push boundaries, and while Nieuw Statendam is a sister to Koningsdam, we do have some new ideas that will be revealed in time.”
