Japan’s Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) along with Kawasaki Heavy Industries has developed an integrated vessel operation and performance management system called Kawasaki – Integrated Maritime Solutions (K-IMS).
K-IMS is based on K Line’s two existing systems installed at its fleet; ship performance analysing system (SPAS) and engine plant monitor (EP-Monitor).

SPAS is an electrical AB log and vessel performance analyser, and EP-Monitor provides remote monitoring for the vessel engine plant condition.
K-IMS combines a system which includes an improved EP-Monitor and a newly adopted optimum navigation system (NAVI).
K Line noted that the improved EP-Monitor is now able to collect and observe all kinds of operation data, including navigation data.
By combining these individual systems, K Line can utilise real-time operation data, known as big data, from vessels in mutual systems.

By GlobalDataThe new system has also enabled the company to support vessel operation and manage vessel performance in an easy way.
K-IMS and big data are designed to be managed in cloud systems in the shore server and have several functions, including monitoring the operating condition of vessels, analysing the performance of vessels and deciding the safest and lowest cost recommended course based on the analysis result and weather information.
The new data browsing system can also be shared among operation teams, ship management companies and vessels, contributing to safety navigation and saving fuel cost.
Additionally, the system helps improve vessel operation and management.
Meanwhile, both companies have jointly undertaken a Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport project.
The project, entitled ‘Enhancing analysis accuracy by automatic correction function with hull property model and applying it to safety operation’, has helped improve the accuracy of NAVI System.
K Line noted that it would continue to work on building a reliable safety operation organisation by improving the accuracy of optimum navigation system, as well as further developing and using of bottom fouling analysis system, trim optimisation system, engine diagnose system on K-IMS.
