Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine (MHI-MME) has announced the completion of retrofitting new technology on 80 LNG carrier vessels to facilitate running on low-sulphur fuel.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Maritime Environment Protection Committee decided to enforce a global sulphur cap for marine fuel at its 70th session, which was held in London in October last year.

New regulations state that the sulphur content in marine fuel will be reduced from 3.5% to 0.5%.

Oil companies have developed their own brand fuels as Ultra Low Sulfur Heavy Fuel Oil (ULSHFO), which contains less than 0.5% sulphur in order to comply with the new rules.

MHI-MME does note however that the oil property of ULSHFO varies depending on its brand or supplier, and currently has no international standard, meaning it may cause unstable combustion of the burner.

The company claims that the technology used in its burner and control system developed for Low Sulfur Marine Gas Oil (LSMGO) allows fuel combustion in a wide range of viscosity. MHI-MME has applied the developed technology to auxiliary boilers for all new building vessels.
