The Polish Port of Gdansk has completed the expansion of its intermodal container terminal at the Szczecinskie Quay.

Co-funded by the European Union under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme, the project was completed in seven months.

The expansion programme is aimed at enhancing technology and customer service at the container terminal in the Szczecinskie Quay.

"The completion of the project brought forth improvements in the conditions of road-sea, rail-road-sea, and rail-sea transport services."

Works included expansion of the storage area, upgrade of traffic system and parking zones of the terminal and water and sewage management system.

The port is now equipped to accommodate 456 twenty-foot containers and 30 twenty-foot containers with dangerous goods. With four-tier stacking, the total capacity is 1,824 twenty-foot containers and 120 containers with dangerous goods.

The completion of the project brought forth improvements in the conditions of road-sea, rail-road-sea, and rail-sea transport services, as well as an all round productivity subsequently increasing its annual throughput capacity to 100,000TEU, the port said.

Improvements were also said to have been observed in container handling and storage facilities.

Port of Gdansk Authority president of the board Dorota Raben said that the expanded intermodal terminal will be coupled with transport connections with trunk roads and the A1 motorway through the tunnel under the Martwa Wisla river.
