Germany-based navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz has provided an advanced gyro compass system for two 25,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) polar class heavy transport vessels.

Designed for operations north of 70° latitude, both the Audax and Pugnax vessels have been built at the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China for Red Box Energy Services.

"Anschütz instrumentation will enable the vessels to conduct year round operations in the most demanding polar conditions."

The advanced dual gyro compass system features redundancy in distribution as well as a stearing gear control system, including a NP 5500 fully adaptive autopilot system for maximum precision in heading and track control steering.

Featuring two maintenance-free, strap-down gyro compasses that use hemispherical resonator gyros (HRG) for measuring angular rates, the technology provides additional lifetime performance and long-term stability of traditional fibre-optical gyros (FOGs).

The Anschütz instrumentation will enable the vessels to conduct year round operations in the most demanding polar conditions, including temperatures below -40°C.

Built in-line with DNV NAUT-AW and highest ice class notations, both the vessels have already been deployed for module transportation for the Yamal LNG project in Russia.

Raytheon noted that the sensors of its Anschütz gyro compasses offer precision and operational safety to support various challenging missions of the new artic vessels.

The system is also equipped with several features of a typical Anschütz gyro system, including an automatic speed and latitude error correction, an individual speed error correction mode, an independent transmitting magnetic compass path, and quick settling.

In May, Raytheon Anschütz was contracted to retrofit the steering gear control systems for two luxury cruise ships chartered by Noble Caledonia.
