Raytheon Anschütz, a German navigation system manufacturer, has secured a retrofit contract for steering gear control systems on two luxury cruise ships, chartered by Noble Caledonia.
The two cruise ships are Island Sky and Hebridean Sky. The vessels will be retrofitted with the Anschütz NautoSteer AS advanced steering gear control system.

Technical manager of the two ships, Salén Ship Management decided to replace the manual steering gear control systems with a NautoSteer AS steering gear control system.
Besides providing follow-up and non-follow-up control, NautoSteer AS integrates the current autopilot systems on-board. The systems will be replaced this year.
Raytheon Anschütz product manager Olav Denker said: "Safety was the main aspect for the development of the NautoSteer AS, making the system ideally suited for safety sensitive cruise ships.
"In addition, we focused on a user-oriented operating concept, which supports the crew in their fast and safe decision making in critical situations."

While a direct NFU tiller controls the steering gear directly without the use of electronics, a main steering position for all other controls is based on redundant CAN-bus technology.
The supplied system from Raytheon comprises advanced features such as integrated steering failure monitoring, wire-break monitoring and data integrity monitoring.
NautoSteer AS can be integrated into several ship system environments. It is claimed to be optimised for simplified installation, as it offers easier wiring of standard power and bus connections, less cabling, as well as quicker PC-based commissioning and system set-up.
Raytheon Anschütz secured the contracts through its Norwegian distributor Syberg AS, which sold the systems to the ship’s service provider, Triton Marine Services of Norway.
