Rolls-Royce has been contracted by ship building company Kleven to provide ship design and equipment to Norwegian cruise service provider Hurtigruten’s new polar cruise vessels.
The contract with an option for two additional vessels follows conversion of a letter of intent into a firm contract signed between Kleven and Hurtigruten.

Under the £25m contract, the company will provide ship design with a wave piercing bow.
The contract also includes the supply of technology and equipment required for building the cruise vessels.
Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam said: “The ships soon about to take shape in the docks of Kleven will be striking. They will attract interest to both the Norwegian ship building industry and to Hurtigruten as a leading player within the field of explorer tourism.
“To me, this contract is proof of the combined innovation powers of Norway’s maritime industry and the country’s growing tourism industry. Together we are providing growth along the long and beautiful Norwegian coastline.”

By GlobalDataRolls-Royce will also deliver its Unified Bridge, a human-machine interface of a broader and deep integration of ship systems.
The consoles, levers and software interfaces provide a more comfortable, clutter-free and safe working environment for the captain and his team on the bridge, Rolls-Royce said in a statement.
Rolls-Royce offshore and merchant solutions director Helge Gjerde said: “Hurtigruten and Kleven have agreed to build state-of the art passenger vessels, and Rolls-Royce will provide some of the most innovate ship technology on the market today.
“I’m confident that these new polar cruise vessels will bring the proud heritage of the Hurtigruten into a similarly proud future.”
As previously agreed, Kleven and Hurtigruten will build up to four expedition-style ships, with plans to deliver them in 2018 and 2019.
The vessels with environmentally-friendly technology will be designed to undertake expedition voyages in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.
