South Korea’s STX Offshore & Shipbuilding has won an order from an unnamed European shipping firm to build six container ships.

In addition, the South Korean shipbuilder has also finalised newbuilding contract modifications with the European shipowner, which modified the earlier order for 13,000teu boxships to 16,000teu boxships, placed in October last year.

The company said that the new order and adjusted newbuilding contract total $1.6bn, according to asiasis.com.

The 16,000teu vessels will have a length of 399m, breadth of 54m and height of 30m, and will be built at Jinhae yard.

The vessels are scheduled to be delivered from the third quarter of 2014.

According to reports, the recent 16,000teu newbuildings could have been ordered by Zodiac Marine.
