Finland-based The Switch has been selected to provide its permanent magnet (PM) shaft generator for a 45,000m³ LNG carrier, being built by China Merchants Heavy Industry.
The order is said to be part of a complete energy efficiency system to be supplied by WE Tech Solutions to Saga LNG Shipping, with delivery expected to commence this year.
The Switch business development manager Mika Koli said: "The optimised PM shaft generator system using WE Drive allows unprecedented levels of energy efficiency in the marine industry."
Incorporating WE Tech’s variable frequency drive for shaft generator applications, WE Drive boosts the vessel’s efficiency over its entire speed range.
The Switch’s PM shaft generator uses WE Drive’s active, front-end, low-harmonic drive technology to operate over the full main engine speed range and produce electricity for the vessel.
The high-speed permanent magnet machine (PMM) 500 marine shaft generator will be integrated with the power take out (PTO) shaft of the propulsion line’s reduction gear.
The Switch’s shaft generators come in power ranges from 0.5MW to 4MW at speeds of up to 2,000rpm.
The PMM technology is said to facilitate fuel savings of approximately 20% to 30% and reduce the need for installed power.
This reduces weight and energy generation requirements, hence decreasing fuel consumption and the need for maintenance.
Along with The Switch’s PM shaft generator and WE Drive, WE Tech will also supply its power distribution solution that provides the vessel with up to 1,200 kW of electrical power in PTO mode.
In the last two years, The Switch has received orders from WE Tech to deliver its PM shaft generator for a range of vessels.
