Color Hybrid will be the world’s largest plug-in hybrid vessel once completed, and will be deployed for use on Color Line’s ferry route connecting Sandefjord and Strömstad in Norway.

The vessel will be able to accommodate 2,000 passengers, 100 crews and 500 cars.

Color Line CEO Trond Kleivdal said: “It is very gratifying that the Norwegian shipbuilding industry has proven its competitiveness internationally, and that Color Line contributes to the further development of the Norwegian maritime industry.”

Ulstein noted that plug-in hybrid vessels are recharged via a power cable with green electricity from shore facilities, or recharged on board by the ship's generators as a secondary alternative.

Color Hybrid is planned to be equipped with latest noise and emissions reduction technologies, and will receive battery power from the shore power facilities belonging to Color Line’s network in Norway, including Sandefjord.

The ship is expected to enter service by 2019, and is set to feature almost double the capacity of M / S Bohus, which is currently being operated by Color Line between Sandefjord and Strömstad.

Ulstein also stated that it would build Color Hybrid as per requirements of the Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register (NOR).
