Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract to provide its dual-fuel engines for the Finnish Transport Agency’s icebreaker being built by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard.

The scope of the contract includes one eight-cylinder Wärtsilä 20DF, two nine-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF, and two 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF engines.

The equipment is scheduled for delivery in spring 2015.

Arctech Helsinki Shipyard managing director Esko Mustamäki said: “The new icebreaker features the highest technology and will be built especially to operate in the demanding winter conditions of the northernmost Baltic Sea.”

The new icebreaker is said to be the world’s first LNG fuelled vessel powered by engines capable of operating on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low sulphur diesel fuel.

Scheduled for launch in late 2015, the vessel will be able to move through 1.6m thick ice with the capability to break a 25m-wide channel in 1.2m-thick ice at a speed of 6k.

Additionally, it will be able to reach an average assistance speed of up to 11k and a minimum of 16k in open water.

The icebreaker will also independently perform oil spill response operations and emergency towing under challenging conditions, in addition to ensuring safe seaborne transports in the Baltic Sea.
