Norsepower has launched Norsepower True Performance, a new system designed to measure and monitor the performance of wind propulsion in maritime operations.

This system evaluates the effectiveness of both sails and ship propellers, offering shipowners, charterers, and regulatory bodies accurate data on the operational impact of Norsepower Rotor Sails.

Historically, assessing the effectiveness of wind propulsion has been complicated due to fluctuating operational conditions.

Norsepower True Performance addresses this challenge by providing real-time measurements of the thrust generated by Rotor Sails, delivering data that supports claims of fuel savings and emission reductions.

The system continuously monitors the performance of various wind propulsion systems, ensuring their reliability over time and facilitating the optimisation of sail technology and control systems.

It also aids shipowners and charterers in determining the financial benefits of wind propulsion by accurately linking fuel savings to the use of these systems.

The system supplies ship operators with critical data to comply with regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Union, including the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), FuelEU Maritime, and the forthcoming Global Fuel Standard (GFS).

Norsepower CEO Heikki Pöntynen said: “By directly measuring thrust force from both the sails and the ship’s propeller, we will deliver the most accurate measurement of wind propulsion performance available today.

“This strengthens not only the business case for wind propulsion but also its role in regulatory frameworks.”

The launch of this system coincides with significant industry events, such as the upcoming discussions at MEPC 83, where further emissions reduction strategies will be developed.

By providing consistent and precise thrust force measurements, Norsepower True Performance equips maritime stakeholders with the necessary information to incorporate wind propulsion into future regulatory frameworks.

Norsepower research and development head Ville Paakkari said: “This system represents the culmination of years of rigorous research, engineering precision, and the integration of advanced AI-powered analytics.

“Our R&D team has developed a framework capable of isolating and quantifying the true thrust contribution of any type of sails in real-world conditions.”

Last month, Stena Line partnered with Norsepower to install two Rotor Sails on its methanol hybrid RoRo vessel, Stena Connecta.

This initiative supports Stena Line’s goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 30% by 2030.
