US-based technology company Parsons Corporation has launched the Freight Intelligent Transportation System (FITS) at the Port of Oakland, alongside multiple partners.

The five-year contract is set to broaden Parsons’ current position as a FITS system integrator to encompass 24-hour operations and maintenance of FITS devices and applications.

According to Parsons, the port has completed the construction and system integration and will now enter the operations and maintenance (O&M) phase.

On the project, Parsons worked closely with the Alameda County Transportation Commission (CTC), Port staff, the City of Oakland, and the California Department of Transportation.

Mark Fialkowski, president, of Infrastructure North America for Parsons emphasised how this partnership will boost movement across the seaport area.

Fialkowski said:  “This has been a true team effort, and we are grateful to the Port of Oakland as well as all of the partnering agencies and subcontractors who joined us in delivering this revolutionary smart port system.”

“We look forward to continuing our work with the Port and partners to enhance the efficiency and reliability of goods movement in the seaport area, empowered by the company’s proven integrated traffic management solutions.”

Parsons and its partners will use artificial intelligence in conjunction with video and data analytics to estimate freight wait times and build predictive models for road closures at rail crossings.

Alongside this, the information gathered will also be utilized to build tailored dashboards for customs border security and port cargo tracking.

Subcontractors on the project included Advent eModal, Mobile Programming, Elite Transportation Group, Kalmar, WiseTech Global, QuayChain, Bear Electric, and Iteris.

Bryan Brandes, Port of Oakland Maritime Director added: “The launch of the Freight Intelligent Transportation System is a bold new step forward for the Port of Oakland”.

“This gives us real-time visibility on goods movement. Our customers will be able to move cargo through the port more efficiently and securely. We appreciate our partners who have worked to implement this critical technology at the Oakland Seaport.”
