The Port of Rotterdam Authority in the Netherlands has unveiled an incentive scheme to help reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from the shipping sector.

As part of the ‘Incentive Scheme Climate-Friendly Shipping’ scheme, the port authority will provide €5m in funding for projects and demonstrations that utilise low-carbon or zero-carbon fuels.

Shippers, shipping companies, fuel manufacturers and suppliers, as well as engine manufacturers and service providers can submit their applications to receive funding under the scheme.

Scheduled to run until the end of 2022, the scheme is set to enable the port authority to help achieve climate policy targets in the Netherlands and across the globe.

The Incentive Scheme Climate-Friendly Shipping is also framed in line with the targets of the World Ports Climate Action Program, which was launched in September.

“Through this scheme, we are able to give various parties just that extra financial push they need to realise a concrete project in this area.”

Port of Rotterdam Authority CEO Allard Castelein said: “We wish to play an active part in the reduction of CO₂ emissions generated by the shipping sector.

In addition, Port of Rotterdam Authority has collaborated with the port authorities of Hamburg, Barcelona, Antwerp, Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Vancouver to jointly work on projects that aim to reduce emissions from the global shipping sector.

In December, the port authority announced the expansion of Green Award discount for sea-going shipping.

The discount is expected to promote safe and green shipping in the liquid bulk sector.
