Stena Line will add an additional cargo deck to two of its vessels to expand their cargo capacity by 30% and meet efficiency requirements by reducing the CO2 emissions per unit.

The Swedish shipping line’s sister company Stena RoRo has signed a conversion contract with China Merchants Jinling (Weihai) Shipyard for the work on the Stena Foreteller and the Stena Forerunner which is expected to finish in 2025.

Niclas Mårtensson, CEO at Stena Line, said: “The conversion of the Stena Forerunner and Stena Foreteller fits with our ambition to reduce our CO2 emissions.

“In addition to increasing the cargo capacity by 30% on both the Stena Forerunner and Stena Foreteller, we also take this opportunity to invest in onboard shore power.”

Work on the capacity of the two Stena Line vessels comes soon after they were both fitted with decarbonisation upgrades last year, including new propellers, silicone paint, and interceptors, fittings which influence the trim of the vessel to improve its efficiency in the water.

Stena RoRo Managing Director Per Westling, said: “At Stena RoRo we see the investment of the installations on the Stena Forerunner and Stena Foreteller as a way to improve services for our fleet customers. We strive to increase cargo capacity while also keeping sustainability in focus. It’s all part of Stena’s identity.”

Stena’s use of the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard continues the relationship between the two companies, which saw another contract for the construction of two NewMax hybrid vessels for use on the Irish Sea begin last year.
