Romanian port operator UMEX has announced the implementation of Nemetschek’s digital twin platform, dTwin, to enhance operational efficiency.

This technology created a digital replica of UMEX’s port infrastructure in Constanța, encompassing berths, storage areas, and warehouses, and integrating key performance metrics and real-time data.

UMEX, managing a strategic port on the Romanian Black Sea coast, handles a diverse range of goods through its five berths.

The port’s infrastructure is designed to accommodate bulk and liquid goods, bagged cargoes, and general cargoes, including steel products and timber.

Previously, UMEX utilised advanced technologies and BIM models to monitor its operations yet faced challenges with disparate data sources.

The collaboration with Nemetschek partner ALLBIM.NET led to the adoption of the dTwin platform.

The technology integrates 3D visualisations, building information modelling (BIM) models, panoramic images, and Internet of Things (IoT) sensor data, offering a comprehensive view of the port’s infrastructure and operations.

The digital twin serves as a centralised source of information, providing a 360° view of the port’s facilities and enabling management to monitor operations closely, identify anomalies, and drive improvements in energy efficiency and productivity.

The implementation of dTwin, including fine-tuning, was completed in over two months.

UMEX is now looking to expand the digital twin’s application by integrating advanced port cranes and extending the technology to other terminals.

UMEX project and investment manager Daniel Nistorescu said: “The development of the strategy, the setup and the fine-tuning of the platform to our needs were carried out in close cooperation with the dTwin team and went smoothly.”

The flexibility of the dTwin platform allows for easy adaptation and the inclusion of additional sensors and systems, facilitating real-time insights into depot and facility productivity, which in turn supports process optimisation.

Nemetschek Group Digital Twin Product head Dr Jimmy Abualdenien said: “Together with the UMEX team, we were able to develop tailor-made solutions in dTwin that directly address the specific challenges of our customer.”
