Union Maritime is set to install two of its newbuild chemical tankers with Rotor Sails manufactured by Anemoi Marine Technologies.

Currently being constructed at Wuhu Shipyard in China, the ships will each be equipped with two EX-rated Rotor Sails, measuring 3.5m in diameter and standing at heights of 20.5m and 24m, respectively.

Installation of the sails is scheduled to take place at the shipyard in early 2026, following their production at Anemoi’s facility in China.

The selection of wind-assisted propulsion forms part of Union Maritime’s approach to exceeding the International Maritime Organization’s 2030 checkpoint for emissions reduction.

The IMO requires a minimum 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 2008 figures, and that at least 5% of energy used comes from zero-emission or near-zero-emission sources.

Union Maritime chief technical officer Bhuvnesh Dogra said: “Wind propulsion is central to Union Maritime’s sustainability roadmap and to our collaborative initiative, Project AeroPower, which demonstrates that commitment in action.

“Partnering with Anemoi reflects our ongoing drive for scalable, high-impact innovation. We believe Anemoi’s Rotor Sail technology will be a powerful enabler of our goal to build the most energy-efficient fleet on the water.”

China-based consultancy Odely Marine completed the design work for integrating the Rotor Sails with the new vessels.

Union Maritime is said to have chosen to partner with Anemoi following a review of various wind technologies.

Anemoi said that it made adjustments to previous foundation arrangements to enable installation on these tankers.

Anemoi CEO Clare Urmston said: “We’re proud to partner with Union Maritime on these forward-looking vessels. Integrating Anemoi Rotor Sails from the outset showcases what can be achieved when innovative owners commit to wind-assisted propulsion.

“This project highlights the strong operational benefits of our technology and sets a new benchmark for efficient, future-ready chemical tankers.”
