Wartsila to deliver propulsion machinery for fishing vessel

Marine technology group Wartsila has received a contract from Karstensens Shipyard for the delivery of the main propulsion machinery for an 89m-long pelagic purser / trawler.

Marine technology group Wartsila has received a contract from Karstensens Shipyard for the delivery of the main propulsion machinery for an 89m-long pelagic purser / trawler.

The shipyard is constructing the ferry for a North Atlantic fishing group, Christian i Grótinum, which is based in the Faroe Islands.

The fishing vessel will be equipped with Wartsila 31 main engine.

The company will also provide a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which will reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions, the shaft generator and a two-speed gear with power take-off (PTO) function.

The vessel will also receive the shafting, a controlled pitch propeller (CPP) and its ProTouch propulsion control system.

Wartsila will deliver the equipment to the yard in the middle of next year, following which the vessel will be delivered to the operator in January 2022.

Wartsila Marine Power Area Sales general manager Jens Karlsson said: “Efficiency and sustainability are essential in today’s operating environment, and these values are emphasised with this vessel through the combination of Karstensens’ design and Wartsila’s highly efficient solutions.”

Christian í Grótinum owner and skipper Bogi Rasmussen added: “This newbuild promises to set a new standard for pelagic fishing vessels.

“We required the latest propulsion technology and Wartsila has such a strong reference list in delivering state-of-the-art solutions that they were the obvious partner for us to select.”

In July, Wartsila received a contract to supply complete bridge systems installation for five ice-breaking liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled tankers.
