Yang Ming Marine Transport has awarded a contract to CSBC Corporation to build ten 2,800 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) class full container vessels.
The new container ships are expected to enhance the competitiveness of Yang Ming’s fleet, as well as help the company to meet the future demand for medium and long-term vessels.

The delivery of the vessels is scheduled to commence by the second quarter of 2020.
Yang Ming in a statement said: “In light of the rapid growth seen in the Asian emerging markets, the 2,800 TEU class container ships will be well-suited for deployment in most of the major ports in the Asian region.
“In the meantime, Yang Ming will be taking delivery of five 14,000 TEU chartered vessels beginning in the fourth quarter 2018 and throughout the first half of next year.
“These new container ships will update our fleet, and provide flexibility and broader service coverage for both long-haul and regional services.

The newly ordered ships will be designed to meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) new marine environmental regulations, which are scheduled to come into effect from 2020.
Furthermore, the vessels will feature a sword-type bow design to save fuel and lower their sulphur content, along with a more efficient ballast water treatment system.
They will also feature the ‘full spade rudder’ design, which is slated to offer various benefits such as high rudder efficiency and energy savings, as well as reducing eddy current corrosion of the bow and aft.
The ships will comprise ABS NBL-grade, fully auto-pilot navigation systems to increase their overall navigational safety.
In addition, the vessels will be fitted with global satellite broadband and network layout capabilities to enable them to meet future big ship data management requirements.
