Tanker shipping company Stena Bulk has introduced the prototype of the IMOFlexMAX, ‘next-generation product and chemical tanker’.
The tanker reduces greenhouse gas emissions by over 25% compared to current product tankers.

The vessel is expected to address the current and future requirements of liquid bulk shipping and the design is based on flexibility and efficiency.
Stena Bulk president and CEO Erik Hånell said: “The world’s need for reliable, innovative and sustainable transportation of liquid products is increasing and it will continue to do so as the world’s population grows and global living standards continue to improve.”
IMOFlexMAX was designed by architects from Stena Teknik, its sister company and is expected to spearhead towards a ‘sustainable future as one of the most energy-efficient product and chemical tankers’.
The vessels will feature Flettner rotors and solar panels to produce energy from wind and sunlight. They will also have dual-fuel engines that can operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low-sulfur fuels.

By GlobalDataThe IMOFlexMax basic concept is expected to decrease the local SOX, NOX and particle emissions along with greenhouse gas emissions.
With the fuel and energy efficiencies, Stena Bulk can decrease greenhouse gases by approximately 25% with a potential to touch 45%.
Hånell added: “The plan is for the IMOFlexMAX vessels to be deployed in Stena Bulk’s logistics system in the global market along with the IMOIIMAX. The IMOFlexMAX vessels will constitute an important asset for Stena Bulk, as well as for its partners, in strengthening our position as the market-leading, cross-trading specialists in the MR segment with increased efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gases.

In April, Stena Bulk and GoodFuels completed the trial with an MR tanker that used 100% sustainable marine biofuel.
