Fincantieri subsidiary Vard has received a contract to design and build another service operation vessel (SOV) for the UK’s North Star Group.

Earlier in April, the company won an order to deliver three SOVs for North Star Renewables.

The new SOV, which will be built at Vard’s Vard Vung Tau shipyard in Vietnam, will join the shipowner’s hybrid-driven renewables fleet in Q4 2024.

North Star secured a long-term charter contract to deliver the fourth ship to back the third stage of the Dogger Bank Wind Farm, situated more than 130km off the north-east coast of England, in the North Sea.

As of now, Dogger Bank is undergoing construction by joint-venture allies SSE Renewables, Equinor and Eni.

Upon completion, it’s claimed that it will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

The new SOV will feature the VARD 4 12 design, which has been created by Vard Design in Ålesund, Norway.

The vessels will have the capacity to provide corrective maintenance services on the Dogger Bank C wind arrays in extreme North Sea environments.

With a length of 78m and beam of 19m, the new SOV will be able to carry 60 persons in single cabins.

It will feature a height-adjustable boat transfer system, motion-compensated gangway with elevator system, and 3D-compensated crane for handling cargo.

In addition, the hybrid vessel will be loaded with a diesel-electric propulsion system, main propellers and tunnel thrusters, as well as SeaQ solutions provided by Vard Electro.

The SeaQ solutions include SeaQ Energy Storage System Solution, SeaQ Integrated Automation System (IAS), SeaQ Power Management system (PMS), SeaQ Energy Management System (EMS) and SeaQ Green Pilot (energy monitoring system).

In combination, these are expected to enhance the operational performance of the vessel as well as lower its environmental footprint.
