Engineering firm Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), along with Finnish ship designer Deltamarin, has secured approval in principle (AiP) from the Norwegian classification society DNV for the design of a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-driven pure car and truck carrier (PCTC).
Both companies are working on the development of a new dual-fuel vessel, which would carry 8,000 car equivalent units (CEU).

GTT will provide its Mark III membrane LNG fuel tank for the new vessel, while Deltamarin will deliver its expertise in the development of the new design.
“The AiP from DNV confirms that the design of the LNG-fueled PCTC is feasible and that no obstacles exist to prevent the concept from being constructed and operated,” stated GTT.
Said to be the most compact of its kind, the LNG system has been designed by the two firms to improve cargo capacity and energy consumption, as well as offer maximal vessel LNG autonomy.
The LNG fuel tank’s two-bar gauge (barg) design will help improve pressure holding efficiency, as well as increase operational flexibility during bunkering operations.

Last July, GTT won a contract from Korean shipyard Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to design fuel tanks for five LNG-powered container vessels.
