Qinetiq Shemara

QinetiQ’s Paramarine ship and submersible design software has been used by Canark Marine to support the restoration of a number of superyachts, including the recent Shemara superyacht refit.

Originally launched by JL Thornycroft in the UK in 1938, the classic motor yacht Shemara had rarely been out of the glamorous spotlight in its infancy. Canark’s engineers redesigned the 65m classic motor yacht using Paramarine while retaining her original character and charm. After a three-and-a-half-year and one million man-hour project, Shemara, once one of the world’s largest and most famous private yachts, has been restored back to her former glory.

"We have been using Paramarine for over three years for a variety of tasks. For the work we do we need a reliable, robust and trustworthy solution to support docking, stability and resistance and powering calculations, for which Paramarine is ideally suited. It provides an intuitive interface and makes easy work of significant quantities of calculations in a very short timeframe. The team at QinetiQ are always on hand, helpful and fast to respond when support is needed. Paramarine remains my go to piece of software and I can’t recommend it highly enough," commented Chris Parke director Canark Marine.

Paramarine is based on over 25 years’ experience in marine design and has been used by many of the world’s leading shipbuilders and ship designers, as well as some of the world’s leading universities including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University College London.

"The use of Paramarine by Canark Marine further demonstrates the capabilities of the software in the superyacht market. We are seeing more and more naval architects around the world turning to Paramarine for its rich and growing functionality, ease of use and ability to speed up the whole ship design process," said Gareth Draper business manager marine design software QinetiQ.

Paramarine forms part of the recently launched International Maritime Consultancy and Software (IMCS) capability, which combines QinetiQ’s naval architecture expertise, ship design software and state-of-the-art physical testing facilities to provide a comprehensive maritime consultancy.
